Lunasalt is based on Nantucket Island, shaped by years spent working on the water and a practical understanding of how materials behave at sea—knowledge earned through commercial fishing, shellfishing, diving, and oyster farming within Nantucket’s working waters.

We work with American selvedge denim, jackets, and textiles, aging them through real maritime conditions rather than conventional factory washing. Our pieces are not finished to look worn—they are allowed to become worn through exposure, movement, and time.

The sea has always been our reference point. Not as an aesthetic, but as a working environment.

Maritime Aging

We practice Maritime Aging, a slower, environment‑driven approach to processing denim. Instead of enzymes, resins, or artificial distressing, we rely on saltwater, tidal motion, sunlight, and duration to do the work.

Garments are placed into active maritime settings and left to respond naturally. Some develop bold contrast, others remain quieter. What emerges is never pre‑designed. It’s shaped by conditions.

The LunarTide™ Method

All surface‑aged Lunasalt garments follow the LunarTide™ Method.

Using surface‑level marine environments, denim is worked by repeated tidal movement, sun exposure, and saltwater contact over a fixed period of time. The motion is constant but low‑impact, allowing fibers to relax evenly while maintaining structure.

No wear patterns are imposed. Any fading or tonal change is earned through exposure.

Environmental Expressions

Within the LunarTide™ Method, different coastal environments create distinct expressions:

  • OYSTR‑WASH — A deep‑water oyster farm, where garments rest in floating cages at the surface. Sun, saltwater, and the natural turbidity of the ocean produce balanced, even aging with depth and consistency.

  • JETTY‑WASH — Open surface water near coastal structures. Increased motion and reflected energy allow stronger contrast to develop naturally over time.

  • COATUE‑WASH — A shallow tidal pool fed by a tributary, with a muddy, silty bottom and periodic flooding and draining. Fine sediment and brackish water create warmth and subtle irregularity through slow settling rather than abrasion.

These are not stylistic treatments. They are responses to place.

Materials & Making

We work exclusively with 100% cotton fabrics, avoiding synthetics and microplastics. Our denim and textiles are sourced from deadstock and American‑made selvedge, including Cone Mills fabric from Greensboro, North Carolina.

Where freshwater is used, it is collected from natural springs and handled responsibly. Garments are dried naturally in the open air. Packaging and rigging materials are often repurposed from working fishing equipment—buoys, nets, and lines—keeping useful materials in circulation and out of the water.

Looking Ahead

Alongside LunarTide™, we are developing the DeepWater™ Method—a separate Maritime Aging process conducted below the surface in cold, lightless conditions. With slower movement and no sun exposure, it offers a more restrained evolution of the same philosophy.

Our Approach

We don’t chase trends, shortcuts, or immediacy.

We make garments meant to be worn often, repaired when needed, and kept for a long time. Denim that settles in, rather than wears out.

Lunasalt exists for people who care about how things age—quietly, honestly, and over time.
